Africanita Market with cherry blossoms at full bloom earlier this spring. The store is located on Jackson Street in the Little Saigon neighborhood, across from the street car stop. Africanita sells a selection of personal care products, caco butter lotions, aromatic spices, dried fish, and more.
Africanita is a market of Central African origin, with a diverse array of essential products and food. Conspagna serves traditional foods with flavorful meat and vegetable dishes and, of course, the famous Ethiopian coffee ceremony. Drawing customers from communities near and far — Seattle, Federal Way, Tacoma, Shoreline — Jackson Street is a central spot for both businesses. Maraviha, a customer stopping by with family, excitedly shared, “I live near here and am so happy for this shop to show my home country’s culture and food. I feel at home here. Come visit!”
Madidilo Andre and Mariano Pedro, married and co-owners of Africanita, spent five months searching for a spot in the neighborhood. Where they landed, across from the Little Saigon streetcar stop, was the only lessor to call them back. “We are the first African market in the International District,” said Madidilo Andre, proudly. Africanita is only one of two within a 5-mile radius.
